Our Phones are always busy/not working. What gives?
We have 3 phone lines. Since the beginning of April, we have done nothing but answer phones and emails and we just can't keep up. Our phone machine just went on strike so temporarily the message is generic. We are sorry and fixing this quickly with new technology. It is best and faster to send us an email, but even those have about a 2 day turn around time.
What if my Economic Impact check was deposited into the account opened by tax office? (Updated 5/7/2020)
We have heard from some of our clients that their stimulus check was deposited into the account opened at the tax office to process their fees or deposited onto their Wal-Mart branded cash card and were wondering if we would be printing it out for them. Unfortunately, no. We have not been given that option.
This is the final word. The IRS deposited clients' stimulus money into these short-term, one-use accounts and there were lots of glitches (see Washington Post headline on the front page of our website). The banks (there are more than one involved) have reacted differently some returning these deposits to the IRS. Each bank decided individually how they will handle these checks.
We do not know how long this process will take and there is no phone number to call to check on the status of your stimulus money or to find out when it will be delivered other than the IRS on line portal (see below).
Please note, Ameri Tax Service does not have and has never had access to your tax refunds or stimulus money.
What if I am no longer at the address on the tax return?
You should do two things immediately. Go to the post office web site www.usps.com and scroll down and there is a place to change your address on line. You can have mail forwarded from the "old" address to this new address beginning as soon as three days. The post office will charge you $1.25 for this service, If I remember right, so have your credit or debit card handy.
Second, change your address with the IRS as www.IRS.gov In the search box on the top right, put in "Form 8822". Click on the link that will show up. Print it out and mail it in. There is no way to do this on line. The address to mail it to is on the form. Fill this form out carefully.
How can I get my Economic Impact Check (Stimulus Check) Direct Deposited?
1. If you received your recent IRS refund check OR your SSI/Social Security check direct deposited, you need to do nothing.
2. If you received your recent IRS refund check by picking it up from our office, you will need to go to IRS.GOV website
https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments If you use this link specifically, there is a area for Non-Filers and for Filers. BOTH OF THESE LINKS ARE ACTIVE AS OF 4/15/2020. Please have your tax return handy when you do this. It will ask you for your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). THIS SHOULD BE FOUND ON LINE 8b (for tax year 2019. There appear to be BUGS in the IRS data base. Clients have called and said they entered their socials, birthdays and addresses and the app says the information entered is incorrect. Please be sure the address exactly matches the one on your tax return. Unfortunately, we can NOT help you with this. If you have an apartment number, enter it as a hashtag....for example....#2. If you are not matching, there is nothing you can do but wait for the paper check to come in the mail.
If you enter through IRS.GOV, at the top of the page, there are a serious of 8 boxes (2 wide by 4 deep). On the top row on the LEFT, there is a LIVE button for NON-FILERS (See below). Click on it. On the top row on the RIGHT is a Covid-19 Relief button, filers can click this and it will take you to an Economic Impact Page. The Economic Impact link will take you to where to enter your direct deposit information, but this is NOT live yet. If you scroll down further, in a box is another area for Filers Economic Relief, it will also take you to where you can open an account and enter direct deposit info.
The NON-FILER button is now LIVE. If you haven't filed a return for 2018 or 2019 and you aren't getting SSI or Social Security direct deposited already, Create and Account for yourself. I'm sure it will ask for your address on your last tax return or social security checks so be ready.
If you had your taxes done in 2018 or 2019 you click on the FILERS box. This is where you can create an IRS account and then are able to input your direct deposit information. As soon as we know more about how it works, we will post more. UNFORTUNATELY, we CANNOT help you with this process per IRS directives, for your own safety, given fraud risks.
GOT AN EXISTING CASH CARD? You may be able to receive your Economic Impact Check (stimulus check) directly deposited on your existing cash card, Green Dot card, EDD or other government benefits debit card. Call the 800 number on the back of that card to get your routing and account information.
3. If your IRS refund check was funded through a bank product program (you paid your preparation fees through it) and it was direct deposited into your account, you need to do the same thing as #2 above.
4. If you owed money, you will not have had any direct deposit information on your tax return. You will need to go to the IRS web site and find the FILERS button/link, create an account and enter your direct deposit portal enter your information.
How long will I have to wait if the IRS check is mailed?
It is estimated a mailed Economic Impact Check will take 3 - 6 weeks longer than a direct deposited check...but no promises. The IRS says it will begin mailing out Economic Payment checks by the end of April. However, this date has been sliding so it could be later and it will take some time to get millions of deposits made.
I didn't get credit for my dependent, what do I do?
Currently there is nothing you can do. We have heard that if you you didn't get credit for your dependent you will be able to ask for it on your year 2020 tax return (Which will be ready for e-filing toward the end of January 2021). We hope there may be a "resolution portal" the IRS sets up. Keep hoping. The IRS put out a call to get furlough workers back to work--apparently unopened mail is backing up.
Also, if your dependent was disabled and over 16 years or age, it doesn't appear like you will get the $500. This may change. We'll keep waiting for updates and post them as we hear them.
I am a citizen, but my spouse isn't, yet. Will I get the stimulus check?
No, if you are married to someone without an active social security card, no matter where they are in the green card or immigration process, you the tax payer will not be eligible to get the $1200.00. However, if you are in the military, there is a carve out. Military personnel married to someone without an active social security card WILL get the $1200, spouses without an official social will not quality of course, even if the children have official socials.
What's up with Unemployment benefits? Do I qualify?
We are not experts in unemployment benefits. Go to the WWW.EDD.CA.GOV site for up to date information. NOTE unemployment benefits have been expanded to include gig economy workers and workers who are experiencing reduced hours due to Covid-19. News sources tell us this feature is not yet implemented through online unemployment applications, that you should wait a week or two to apply and if you've been reject to apply again once the software has been implemented to include the new expanded unemployment benefits.
Whats up with Small Business Loans (SBA)?
We are not providing a service to help clients with their SBA loan applications. There are many different Covid-19 relief programs for small businesses on the SBA website. The first round of funding ran out. The second round of funding was approved April 23rd. It is best to go through your business bank's portal. If you are a sole proprietor, enter the bank account that you use the most for your work.
Go to www.sba.gov/funding-programs/disaster-assistance for all the details of the various programs. Also talk with your primary business bank for their procedures. The most common program for small business right now is the Paycheck Protection Program. To prepare for this program you will have to know your 2019 and 2020 payroll as well as your 2019 Independent Contractor costs (1099-Misc) that you filed by person as reported to the IRS.
What are your hours?
Are you still taking appointments and doing returns?
What if the address on my return has changed or is wrong?
Fraud Alert...Don't even trust close family or your boyfriend/girlfriend with your bank account information. You all know a story where those relationships have gone "south".
Do not let someone else handle your direct deposit change on the IRS website. Struggle through it yourself or wait until it is mailed to your house. If your address is incorrect, fill out the IRS Form 8822 available at www.IRS.gov, and search Form 8822. Print it out and mail it to the address on the form instructions.
